KDC Programs and Activities

Kansas State Fair

KDC is extremely active and involved at the State Fair where there is the potential to reach over 300,000 people in a 10 day period.  One of the most popular exhibits is Agriland.  KDC partners with the Kansas Department of Ag and other commodities groups across the state, to provide a fun, yet educational experience.  Kids and adults have the opportunity to experience and learn about where their food comes from. “Blossom” is a life-sized model of a dairy cow and can be “hand milked”.  She is the center of attraction.

Here fair-goers visit various stations to learn about agriculture.  Included is another cow that can be “hand milked” (furnished by MDA).  By completing this tour, fairgoers are given a coupon for a FREE soft-serve ice cream cone at the Dairy Bar.

Stephanie Eckroat, Dairy Herdsperson at Fort Hays State University, offers 5 “live” milking demonstrations per day of the Fair.  Many young school children experience this and are rewarded with a coupon for a FREE soft-serve ice cream cone at the Dairy Bar.

Dairy Shows

KDC helps to sponsor several dairy shows within the state.  These include the Washington County Spring Junior Dairy Show and The Kansas All Breeds Junior Dairy Show.

Milk Machine Grants

KDC offers grants for the purchase of dairy products to use in newly purchased milk vending machines.  Contact the KDC office for details.

Research Grants

Every year KDC looks at various research projects within the state that are dairy related.  The board reviews these and will approve those that are considered most worthy and when funds are available.

Scholarships

The Kansas Dairy Commission offers several scholarships.  Two $1,000  (non renewable) scholarships are available to any qualified student from a dairy farm that is an active participant in the KDC checkoff.  More details are available from the KDC office.

KDC and Dennis Metz (past KDA/KDC board member and Fort Hays State graduate) each contribute $500 to the Al Graf Memorial Scholarship at Fort Hays State.

Scholarships are also offered to qualified teachers that enroll in Ag in the Classroom.

These are some of the major activities/programs that KDC is involved in.  Contact the KDC office more details/information.
