Kansas is one of the most unique dairy states in America. While we may only have about 400 dairymen in the state, we now rank #16 in milk production on a national basis. About 12 years ago we ranked 24th. In the early 1990’s a new trend began to develop in western Kansas as larger dairies began to appear. Some were moving in from other states and some were just local folks who saw an opportunity. Most of these dairies consisted of 1500 cows or more. In fact the 2500-3000 head dairies seem to be the most popular. This of course is much different than the 60-100 cow dairies that make up the majority of dairying in central and eastern Kansas. There are approximately 20 larger dairies now in western Kansas that produce almost 70% of the state’s milk production. This extreme diversity is what makes dairying in Kansas so much different than other parts of the country.
Because Kansas is a large agriculture state, it just makes sense for dairying to be a key part of the state’s ag production. Abundant quality feed supplies and a central USA location also contribute to making it attractive to dairy in Kansas. We are also very fortunate to have one of the best land grant universities-Kansas State University. Having their own dairy, allows them to conduct valuable research projects that also help Kansas dairymen as well as other dairymen nation wide. With a very effective extension program to go along with this, information and help are many times only a phone call or visit away.
Kansas is also unique in that it has 4 dairies that process all or a portion of their herd’s milk production. Some just process cheese, others do just fluid milk and some do ice cream and fluid milk. This is all done on-farm.
